Changing production companies happens more often than you might think. You may have lost contact, your maintenance contract has ended, or it may be time to create a new one. If you don't take over at this time, there are things you have to recreate from scratch. Organized into lists.

Why do I need to prepare it in advance?

In many cases, the relationship has already become strained by the time you decide to change companies. If you make a request then, cooperation will be slower. The best time is when you sign the contract, the best time is now.

It is cleanest if the contract states “Scope of handover upon termination.” If you don't have it, you can get the list now.

Even if you secure only the above three (domain, hosting, and administrator account) Avoid the worst.

Do I need to take over the search engine account as well?

Yes. This is often missed. search data has accumulated in Google Search Console and Naver Search Advisor. This is a record of what search terms people used and which pages responded well.

If you only register as a business account, this record will be lost entirely. A new company has to rebuild from scratch, and there is no basis for judgment in the meantime.

Solving is simple. Just ask the vendor to “add our account as a user.” Ownership is not transferred, but authority is shared, so there is less burden on the company.

Order to check when handing over

Order
1Confirm or transfer the domain registrant name to our company
2Check if it works by logging in directly with the hosting/administrator account
3Download the source and database backup files and open the archive
4Request to add our account to the search engine account
5Make sure to keep a backup copy before handing it over to a new company.

Once you receive it, you should open it. The file may be empty or have a different version.

What should I do if I don’t hand it over?

Check the contract first. If there is a handover clause, you can make a request based on it.

If there is no clause, it must be resolved through negotiation. However, for the domain, there is a separate procedure through the registrar. If the name of the registrant is our company, it can be managed without the cooperation of the company. That's why the domain name is the first important thing.

Here's some practical advice: Get a list before the relationship gets worse. This is more certain than any legal provision.
